A kitchen dining space in elms of over twenty years ago. It was also the first outing for our 'finback' chair. I designed this piece intentionally to celebrate the skills of making, its sculpted profiles require the competence & confidence of a consummate maker. I was seeking a parity of status between process & concept, thought & action. A further incarnation of 'finback' ended up in the Twentieth & Twenty-First century British Crafts section of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge & can be seen beneath the odd Ben Nicholson or even Picasso! These times will come again, for some of us. We wait in patience for such an evening. This piece was designed and made for a couple to celebrate their marriage, twenty two years ago. It was a gift to them from their friends as a celebration of the onset of their life together. This post is a memorial to one of them who died this winter but their love & those of their friends shines on. We need to dig deep this January as the wind whips round the outside of our workshop, rattling the doors and, as anyone who makes furniture will agree, those inside grapple with the winter fight with moisture content. The makers' seem very relaxed with the socially distanced chess competition their main point of conflict. Hey ho it's the furniture maker's lot to fret about the conundrums of moisture contents. A burr & plain walnut piece awaits the attention of a finish which will make both, sing the walnuts praises. Part of our winter 'deep digging', apart from socially distanced broom handle chess, is the purchasing of beautiful timbers, from windblown plane cut on the quarter to give a exotic 'lacewood' to some lusciously rippled sycamore. I'm sure Timber merchants will not begrudge me the comment that they are past masters at waxing furniture with words & then charging double for it.
