Frequently asked questions

What is the ‘slow furniture-making society’?

The words ‘commissioning’ or ‘bespoke’ don’t quite cover it, so we describe it as the slow furniture-making society. Slow as in savouring. This more realistically reflects what we set out to achieve with our designing and making service. Read more on our design studio page.

I’ve got an unused space but I don’t know what I want…

One of Matthew’s favourite tasks is to create a bespoke piece just for you and your family which you will love for generations. Please visit the bespoke page for our past commissions and contact us to discuss your space.

How do I choose the right wood for my furniture?

In the online shop we endeavour to show you all the options in as much detail as possible. We also have a separate woods page which explains more about woods and the different cuts. If you’re thinking of asking Matthew to design a bespoke piece for you, he will recommend the best options for your furniture and lifestyle during the design process.

May I come and visit you?

Please visit us at the showroom in Hindon High Street; visit our contact page for opening times.

Do you offer courses?

We plan on offering workshops in the future, not any time soon though.

Do you have any vacancies for apprentices?

We currently have no vacancies, please check back again later.

Do you send items abroad?

Yes, we have worked with many clients abroad. If you’re after a bespoke design please contact us. If you are looking to purchase an item from the online shop, please contact us for a quote on your delivery options.

How do I look after my furniture?

Timber does not like excessive heat or moisture. It is totally non-judgemental but is not necessarily improved by adornment with felt-tipped pens, inks or other indelible substances. To this end we protect it in one of three ways before sending it out to you. Please visit our workshop page and scroll down to ‘aftercare’ for further details. We also sell oil and wax aftercare kits for your requirements.

I’m visiting from far away – are there places to stay or eat in Hindon?

We can certainly recommend local B&Bs and restaurants. Please visit our showroom page and click on our PDF.

I have a piece of Matthew Burt furniture, sadly I can no longer use it – what can I do?

We can help you with this, please don’t give your item to an auction house. We can sell your piece via our online shop in “Re-imagined” with a short description and a few photographs. We may also have space to store this for you. Please contact us for further details.

I want to buy something from the online shop but I want to collect it from the showroom – is that ok?

Yes of course, please contact us before you purchase online so we can arrange this separately. If you’ve already confirmed your purchase online, please contact us as soon as possible to arrange collection from the showroom in Hindon.

I’m getting married and would like my guests to help us purchase a bespoke piece – how can we do this with you?

Congratulations! Engaged couples in the past have asked their guests to either buy gift cards from us in the online shop or add to a “pot” towards your furniture by calling us. Please ask your guests to call the showroom and provide your name as reference.

My tree has blown down in my garden, would you like my wood?

We have many offers of wood and would be pleased to hear from you.
