Here are a couple of pieces made in the 80s. The pear wood, wall hung cabinets with the barrel hinges, I made on my own in the early part of the decade & then, in English oaks, 'The Wurlitzer' with my first apprentice/assistant, Derek Kenyon, in my new garden workshop in the middle of the decade. Both were for a delightful couple who came 'up the path' in the early days of our adventure. Like every customer since, they demonstrated an inspiring faith in us & a belief that we could convert the design drawing into a scratch & sniff reality. That is something we've never taken for granted and have remained eternally grateful for, it is the magic that still inspires and keeps us at it, 47years later. All those that buy from us know what they like and have the conviction to go ahead with the commission or purchase. Our 'Muse' desk in a spectacular and very rare English, rippled, olive ash. A three drawer, personal desk to write your definitive novel, the perfect love letter, the apology that saves your bacon or the daily diary upon. Like all great design it has the intentional fault, of the angled legs presenting a trip hazard & that look-at-me factor making it irresistible. There's no cable management, no screen stand or accommodation, it's a strictly non digitally compromised piece unless you've been together enough to have charged your laptop or unlike the prissy designer in me could stands to have a cable drooped over the side as you work...if you dipped your hand in your pocket and bought such a jewel, I would quickly turn the other eye. We have a collection of English timbers we could make this piece in, pippy elm, pippy oak, rippled ash, lacewood, figured Wiltshire walnut, spalted beech, spalted sycamore ...... got some very nice chair designs to go with it one day...might even sell something through Instagram one day too. #personaldesks #desks #homeoffice #homedesk #interiors #interiordesign #supportpeopleinsheds #lovenpeace

Two projects that reflect designing to a brief. I designed and made both these pieces for the Dartington Social Research Unit, when it was situated on the Dartington estate in a house designed by William Lescaze and built in the 1930s. Delightful modernist jewels. I have always felt modernism is more suited to domestic rather than huge scale commercial properties, more human somehow. extracts from the brief, that resulted in the sinuous piece were..... we research a sensitive subject...as a consequence we have a clear desk policy (hence the tambour-fronted cabinets to hide everything quickly away of an evening) ... we collect a lot of information in the field which we record on laptops..... we return to the unit to analyse, then transpose after communal discussion, into communicable format.... we need our researchers to be able to sit opposite each other as they do so....AND it all takes place in a William Lescaze setting. The other desks with their transferable, left or right return surface & sliding top boxes, were for the ....directors of course. I hope both pieces have a no nonsense hint towards modernism yet still to speak of today. All were made in English beech & hopefully fit for purpose. Dartington was so intriguing when I first encountered it. The place still echoed with the extraordinary cultural excitement generated by the Elmhirsts, their dosh & those they attracted to contribute to it in its heyday.
