St Thomas's new font in the making. The workshop sings with the skills of a genuine team of eight designer makers. Yes they're overseen by Celia & I & we take the entrepreneurial risks. However all the makers bring their creative skills & problem solving selves to the bench. Then there are those that we choose to associate with. David Garrod's superb engineering creativity, John Barker's artistry and bravura. We have a team of eight makers all of whom have or are learning 'at the bench'. It is a delicate balancing act but with some spectacular results. All power to those who dedicate themselves to skills in whatever form. A wonderful day as we install a font into St Thoma

A wonderful day as we install a font into St Thomas's, Salisbury. Made from sixty four tapering staves of English tiger oak, exploding from a 110mm diametered base & seemingly culminating in 896 tapering end-grain blocks in a dome which supports a beaten copper bowl. The font is movable & comes with a travelling stage, a lifting yoke & a few other surprises. It was a privilege to design a piece for this delightful church & its parishioners. Their kindness, encouragement, support & the team chosen to help was invaluable, their faith palpable, in the convoluted path of the font's creation. It is also a privilege to lead a team of wonderfully committed makers. David Garrod, an engineer without comparison, who made it stand up & be movable with equal strength & constructional integrity. John Barker, the metalsmith who smote the copper into a beaten bowl. In my own workshop, Oli Bowles as lead maker supported by Rick Long & the rest of the team, who all kept the faith and painstakingly realised my design. ....Then there is my wife Celia whose stoic resolve & gentle ways keeps it all afloat, enabling us to create. I love designing & making sideboards. They have got to be one of the most satisfactory pieces of furniture, created especially to make you feel together as they can hide such an abundance of stuff....Here we have an array of them designed & made in the last decade in a litany of British timbers...Bog oak, tiger oak, rippled ash & walnut. When my wife & I started our business in 1977 we had a simple adage that fitted our ethos ...we will design in Wiltshire, we will make in Wiltshire from timber that comes from as close to Wiltshire as possible. Now 46 year's later we are still doing so. All the timbers shown, with the exception of the bog oak, which came out of a bog near Peterborough, & the tiger oak from Hampshire, came from Wiltshire.. All were designed at Albany Studio & workshops or our new site at Lime Tree Studio & Workshops....we're getting there. Oval table & tricorn chairs in English tiger oak, that's an oak whose roots are being colonised by Fistula hepatica, the beefsteak fungus, which reacts with the tannin rich normally pale timber, turning it into this rich streaky brown, gorgeous timber. #interiors #diningtable #diningchairs #kitchentables #dining #eatingin #supportpeopleinsheds #lovenpeace

A tad strange this week 'Cyclops' which originally was in response to design & make a large centrepiece to act as a space for the projector within a commodious home cinema, hence the height, however this turned out to be a brief moment in technology, soon to be superseded by flat screens, streaming & what have you... thus Cyclops became redundant.... or maybe not, its presence is such that I feel sure it will be reincarnated and find another purpose. My bet's on a drinks cabinet. It certainly needs a grand setting. It's made from some rather lovely rippled walnut..... it is a very patient beast.
