ABOUT

This bench evolved out of the designs for the benches we created for the recently extended Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The curved cross section of the seat is copied on its underside. This provides the necessary beam strength to forgo a visually cluttering underframe and give a seemingly simple and sensually sculptural feel to this piece.

The curve

The bench has a counter intuitive convex curve for the seat. I had observed that most conventional chair seats had a cup-shape curve the upturn of which provided little comfort and prescribed which way you sat upon it. The important bit was the size and drop of the convex curve. I ran with that and our solution allows you to sit facing either way in comfort. Strength and Comfort

With all our benches we have kept faith with our mantras of ‘strength and comfort’ & ‘seemingly simple – sculpturally sensual’. They are as comfortably suited for a lengthy sojourn around the dining table, as they are good looking enough to live in the hallway or elsewhere, as a convenient place to do up your laces.

Made for you

The pieces have been chosen because we love them and have proven to be irrepressibly popular and you’ve demanded we make them again and hopefully again and again. They are not faits accomplis, or written in tablets of stone, their dimensions, materials and finishes, can be tweaked. This may begin to nudge them towards, or indeed run headlong into, our Slow Furniture-Making Society and the price differences that will entail. All will be agreed before the onset of construction.
