This 'Island desk' is the final piece in a range of desks & dressers made from bog oak, (with a tiger oak version thrown in with the last pic for good measure). It's not enough for a design to hide behind 'fancy timber', it has to stand on its own merit & deliver on function, aesthetics and inspire sufficient response to be desirable, hopefully purchased & loved. If you get it right it will continue to be recognised as good work, giving good service for generations to come. If you can 'speak' of your own times beyond the whims of fad & fashion you stand a better chance it will weather the vagaries of time, if it's also made well, those chances are only improved. I love the tussle between the dirt of the market place and the designing & making pieces of sufficient twenty-first century relevance to enable me to get up tomorrow and do the same that I did today. If you can do that you are indeed a lucky person. Another Friday evening in these torrid times and another small reason to treat ourselves as best we can & to clutch to all the small pleasures we may. We are fortunate that we can still, with the help of strict hygiene, distancing protocols and willing participation, keep designing & making for you. This week's piece is another for our delightful clients in Bath (may they have rose petals strewn before them), those that we are developing a new chair for as I write. Made from English bog oak , rescued & seasoned by the national living treasure Hamish Low. This tree had been lurking in a bog near Peterborough, a victim of global warming & its subsequent flooding & deluge 5300 years ago! The customised rippled ash interiors are made from a victim of a millennial storm, so a mere nanosecond in comparison. It's a murky Friday evening in deepest winter but we are lucky to be able to go to work. Yes there's lots of hygiene & distancing protocols but unlike many we can carefully keep making. This English bog oak & rippled ash tambour-fronted bureau was designed & made for wonderful clients in Bath, who continue to come back, with generous frequency, for more. We are making a batch of very exciting dining chairs to accompany their 'Centenary Curved Kitchen Table', delivered just before Christmas, as I write, I'll show you all the results when we deliver.
