Our 'Poise Carver' chair with this one in walnut. I have worked really hard on this sensual piece to make it not only look pretty but to be exceptionally comfortable. I feel it's really hit the spot & fortunately most others agree. Yes, it's another oval dining table & yes the chairs as well. The table top is in lacewood. Timber merchants are like me, they wax their work with words. The london plane tree is the most magnificent tree, often to be found along streets & within the parks of our wondrous capital city. Normally their timber is rather innocuous, bland & featureless BUT the centre planks, where the end grain is directly perpendicular to the face, it transforms to the most exotic, un-English looking timber imaginable, like the coat of a rare reptile or the patterning of a luxurious silk. This they re-name as lacewood & who can blame 'em, it is so delightfully delicious. I've married it with a timber in the same colour family, namely cherry. We are just about to embark upon another of these tables, yet each will be different, its own piece, with subtle variation in shape, size & grain patterns. Detail by detail a 3metre 'Lozenge Table' in very rare 'Lucombe Oak' emerges first from the sketch book and then in the workshop. This variety of oak was discovered by a Mr Lucombe at his Topsham nurseries in the 18th century when he crossed a turkey oak with a cork oak a created a semi-evergreen oak (Quercus hispanica lucombeana) whose timber is almost impossible to season. This tree was felled to make way for a new extension at the Holborne Museum in Bath, in whose garden it had flourished. An oval dining table with a difference . When I was a teenager I visited Barbara Hepworth's studio in St Ives.. I walked in & there was a large lump of elm ... with a hole in it...I shook with emotional excitement. Looking back it was the onset of realising I (trigger alert) preferred objects to ideas. To this day that remains the case. The hole in this table can be filled if needed by a piece of stored on a nearby low table. The top is made from lacewood, the centre planks of the London Plane, impossibly exotic almost, reptilian in its markings & surprising amongst the English timbers. #diningtables #diningroom #dining #interiors #bespoke #bespokefurnituredesign #bespokefurnituremaker #supportpeopleinsheds #lovenpeace
