This piece holds a special place in my heart. I designed this at the time of one of the late 20th century recessions. When I travelled to London and emerged from Waterloo to walk across the bridge, I would stop and count the cranes as a means of checking commerce. The more the cranes the better the commerce. In those days the cranes were of a delightful cantilevered structure pointing towards various landmarks in the city. On this occasion I was in London to visit a client. It transpired that they were looking for me to design “a welcoming introductory piece for the hallway”. I immediately thought of the cranes and their pointing the way in. The clients loved the idea and Canti 1, followed by Canti 2, were born. This piece has diagonal v-grooves as a textural surface showing wood is beautiful all the way through the plank, with the grain emphasised by the light playing on these grooves.
Made for you
The pieces have been chosen because we love them and have proven to be irrepressibly popular and you’ve demanded we make them again and hopefully again and again. They are not faits accomplis, or written in tablets of stone, their dimensions, materials and finishes, can be tweaked. This may begin to nudge them towards, or indeed run headlong into, our Slow Furniture-Making Society and the price differences that will entail. All will be agreed before the onset of construction.
