ALAN PETERS OBE – ELM DINING TABLE
With the blessing, support and on behalf of Alan’s widow Laura, we have this beautiful and rare piece for sale designed and made by Alan Peters OBE (1933 – 2009).
Alan was a pivotal and influential furniture designer-maker. His time apprenticed at Edward Barnsley’s workshop, studying at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, and running his own practice in Surrey and Devon spanned more than half a century. Alan inspired a generation of furniture designer-makers with the clarity of his line, his clear connection to the Arts & Crafts ethos and a life lead in their pursuit.
This table is made from elm, a wood which is very dear to my heart and I have often spoken of its qualities. Its rugged, awkward grain does not give up its charms easily and can put up a cussed, tool-blunting fight which needs persistence if you are to reveal its beauty. This table has a top made from one piece, 2130mm long, which would have put up quite a conversational challenge.
I cannot think of a more befitting memorial to both Alan and the elm than this beautifully confident and simple English table.
