The Finback chair without arms was designed with a slight poke at the austerity of Modernism. I wanted to design a piece that exemplified and lauded a maker’s skill, showing their hand upon the work. The chair needed sensuality and comfort and to reach beyond the restraints of machine manufacturer.

This was recognised by the Art Fund and donated by it to the ‘Arts of the 20th Century’ gallery at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

I have long wanted to compliment the original Finback chair by designing a carver version. This year saw that wish beautifully realised in our workshop by the very skilled hands of our senior maker, Rick Long.

Please get in touch if you would like us to make you one. Or two!
