Twenty years ago, in the warmth of the Ionian Sea, I first encountered the spent shells of Paracentrotus lividus, the purple sea urchin. Here was the modern descendent of the fossilised urchins, discovered amongst the flint-strewn chalk downlands of my youth. I was blown away by the exquisite, fivefold symmetry and pattern left by its spiny defence.

This box, with its tenfold symmetry, is our homage to the lowly urchin’s sensual, fecund, domed beauty.

By way of something different, our 'Silhouette Con

By way of something different, our 'Silhouette Console' which can have a panelled or plane top. This one is on elms & brass, others have been in cherry & lacewood or natural & burr oak. I first designed this in the 1980s but it keeps on coming back with a slow but steady trickle of requests to make it again. There's little that compares to those lovely, out of the blue, contacts where we're asked to make an old favourite. We are now in that delicious space where we are occasionally designing & making & selling, for not only the children but the grandchildren of some of our early clients, who themselves still commission. A pair of gates in sweet chestnut that I designed

A pair of gates in sweet chestnut that I designed and made in 1987 still going strong & I've done absolutely nothing to them. The wasps like to harvest its surface for their nests, lichen slowly takes possession, pigeons & sparrows like to defaecate on them, but they swing open with the same enthusiasm & willingness as the day I installed them. Sweet chestnut is a jewel of a tree & timber & I cannot imagine why we haven't planted them in their thousands. They coppice beautifully, they're quick growing, their fruit is delicious, their timber easy to work, pliant, stable & it weathers as well as oak, both if them rich in tannin. They do need an acid soil & are no friend of the chalk but hey ho you can't have everything. #sweetchestnuts #exteriors #gates #gardengates #commissionfurniture commissiondesignandmake #supportpeopleinsheds #lovenpeace
