Our 'Muse' desk in a spectacular and very rare Eng

Our 'Muse' desk in a spectacular and very rare English, rippled, olive ash. A three drawer, personal desk to write your definitive novel, the perfect love letter, the apology that saves your bacon or the daily diary upon. Like all great design it has the intentional fault, of the angled legs presenting a trip hazard & that look-at-me factor making it irresistible. There's no cable management, no screen stand or accommodation, it's a strictly non digitally compromised piece unless you've been together enough to have charged your laptop or unlike the prissy designer in me could stands to have a cable drooped over the side as you work...if you dipped your hand in your pocket and bought such a jewel, I would quickly turn the other eye. We have a collection of English timbers we could make this piece in, pippy elm, pippy oak, rippled ash, lacewood, figured Wiltshire walnut, spalted beech, spalted sycamore ...... got some very nice chair designs to go with it one day...might even sell something through Instagram one day too. #personaldesks #desks #homeoffice #homedesk #interiors #interiordesign #supportpeopleinsheds #lovenpeace

Two projects that reflect designing to a brief. I designed and made both these pieces for the Dartington Social Research Unit, when it was situated on the Dartington estate in a house designed by William Lescaze and built in the 1930s. Delightful modernist jewels. I have always felt modernism is more suited to domestic rather than huge scale commercial properties, more human somehow. extracts from the brief, that resulted in the sinuous piece were..... we research a sensitive subject...as a consequence we have a clear desk policy (hence the tambour-fronted cabinets to hide everything quickly away of an evening) ... we collect a lot of information in the field which we record on laptops..... we return to the unit to analyse, then transpose after communal discussion, into communicable format.... we need our researchers to be able to sit opposite each other as they do so....AND it all takes place in a William Lescaze setting. The other desks with their transferable, left or right return surface & sliding top boxes, were for the ....directors of course. I hope both pieces have a no nonsense hint towards modernism yet still to speak of today. All were made in English beech & hopefully fit for purpose. Dartington was so intriguing when I first encountered it. The place still echoed with the extraordinary cultural excitement generated by the Elmhirsts, their dosh & those they attracted to contribute to it in its heyday. A lucky person picked up a 'Partners Desk' about 1

A lucky person picked up a 'Partners Desk' about 1650mm across & wide, with three shallow, underslung drawers each side & a further five deeper drawers at each end. I designed it for a beautiful Royal Crescent house in Bath, where a couple worked together as partners. It didn't help because they eventually went their different ways. We made it in a bog oak (top) & tiger oak (base). It had concealed cable management system with a communal porthole at the top centre, to keep those pesky cables out of sight and the way. I felt the desk was/is exceptionally cool but there again I would wouldn't I. Fortunately the new owners know a good piece when they see one & having saved it from a warehouse & sale room, & asked us to give it a once over. They are hard on pieces in those places. It is now as resplendent as originally & back to giving good service, hopefully with a better long term outcome for the new owners. Our 'Compass Table' comes in many guises with a 1.2M, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 & 2.4M diameters available, hence 4,6,8,10 & 12 seaters . Needless to say with family you can fit more people around. They have brickwork or staved cones, they can have Natural sawn finish or a more formal polish & both will be heat & moisture resistant.. the chairs are our 'Coopered Diners' which follow suit &,hopefully, compliment the table. Also our leather 'Tricorn Diners'. Available in most English timbers, ash,oak, elm, beech, sycamore & walnut.
