By Leaves we Live, is a quote from the 19th & early 20th-century Scottish biologist, positivist, proto-sociologist, & philosopher Patrick Geddes. He coined this phrase in his attempts to convince early town planners of the importance of gardens in their schemes, a very prescient idea. The letter cutter and designer, Caroline Webb cut the original. It stands as a slate tablet amidst the flowers of her Wiltshire garden. She is dead, but her legacy lives. We decided to make a smaller version that was part of a series of 'art' works given to the king as thank you from the Wylye Valley Art Trail, who were granted an award by his mother, the late queen, for volunteering. Wander around the workshop & talk to some of our consummate craftsmen, have a glass of bubbly, coffee or cuppa, smoked salmon, decent local bread 'n' cheese or proper brownies in the afternoon, then pop into the village to our showroom to find yet more delicious furniture & some excellent 'small' examples of our wares, all for sale & the ultimate Christmas pressie. There are farm shops & then there are Farm Shops & then there's the @birdandcarterwilton farm shop who were kind enough to ask us to design, make & fit their gaff. Such a lovely brief & so well received, now it just requires the great British public to take glorious possession of it & at the same time give a nod to the work upon which their fare is displayed. It's all made from local Wiltshire ash. We've tried hard to save a lot of this ash from the jaws of the Drax power station, where it goes up in smoke to supply someone with enough electric to boil a kettle & yes maybe a life support machine.
