Its Friday evening in the workshop & Celia & I had our first break since December 2019. It's taken us away from the workshop for Couple of weeks. On return when I see the work that's been continuing, my heart swells. For me it feels like family in here, the team have been continuing to work their magic with commitment, care & rigorous skill. I get a tad emotional at the results. A pippy oak drinks cabinet as a wedding gift; a batch of partners & pencil boxes in various English timbers, in preparation for our up coming cosy winter show; an end-grain table in Hampshire tiger oak for, who ever might wish to purchase it. A chip carved sycamore cabinet awaiting delivery, together with a rank of lacewood boxes awaiting their 'Tumbling boxes' installation. Makes me glow. Friday afternoon and time for some reflection.
We create some great mirrors but getting a decent picture of them without making oneself the star of the show is fiddly; just ask van Eyck. But here are some we have in our beautiful Hindon showroom at the moment, different shapes and sizes but all surrounded or supported by the very best of woods: cherry, elm and rippled ash amongst them.
The eagle-eyed may also see further treasures buried in the images (@julie_ayton). But you won’t find me!

Let’s start off the month on an affectionate note, showing further love for our sinuous, sensuous, sinful(?) kissing seat: a creation in the sweetest of sweet chestnuts.
We’ve featured it before but it’s now in situ at the Hindon showroom and regularly being sat upon and sighed over by our covetous clientele, a number of whom have suggested the brushed brass “worry globes" be interchangeable with a glass of Dutch courage on occasion, the effects of which might just result in an amorous lunge. They might be on to something…

Wood: nature’s ultimate building block for warmth, shelter and life. We were recently commissioned by a doting and imaginative granny, who wanted something a bit special for her grandchild’s birthday, so we created this little set. Four woods, sixteen blocks, hours of fun and not a hint of plastic in sight.
We think it’ll go down quite well with the grown-ups, too: something on the coffee table to fiddle with while you’re waiting for your other half to bring you a G&T?
They are robust but smooth; strong but incredibly soft. They’ll outlast us all and we love them.

We have a section of our work that we call 'Loudba

We have a section of our work that we call 'Loudbark'. These are pieces that have been swirling around in my head and clamouring for attention in my sketchbooks, demanding the light of day. I love the sketch book, its where I explore the impossibilities of the possible, privately without the embarrassment of scrutiny from piers, staff, clients or whomsoever. Its my private conversation with myself, it's my safe space where I keep my mind attuned to the myriad & millions of ideas within the universe, seeking out the one that'll work. I now have 34 sketch books! Needless to say, sometimes it proves too difficult to marry an idea with a client & if the idea is strong enough it just insists to be made manifest. That cause the double whammy of spending whilst not earning, that all speculative work incurs. It involves inherent risk & faith. These two pieces are examples of 'Loudbark' & I'm happy to report that both soon found homes & clients kind enough to pay for them. I'm feeling nostalgic. The pieces that came out of my first workshop were lovely. My wife & I built the workshop from found materials, purloined from skips or battered for locally, in 1978. Yep we were self sufficient in veg & went for the dream hammer n tongs. The first piece I made, completely by hand because I had no machines, was a door for a generous cousin, may she be rewarded in heaven. We had no other means of income so ended up on marmite & milk tokens! We danced with debt, dodged realities and by 1985 were building another workshop in front of the original. This grew along with apprentices, consuming the original as it did so, until 6 or 7 of us toiled within it. We eventually realised we had to return our garden to its original purpose & seek a workshop elsewhere. We found it on the outskirts of a village where we already had our showroom, the bustling jewel that is Hindon, with its two famous inns offering respite for those negotiating the vagaries of the A303 as it dips in & out of dual carriageway, on its tortuous passage through Wiltshire. Here we now reside designing & making, achingly beautiful twenty first century English furniture. You can drop in and meet us & our furniture, via our showroom on Hindon High Street.
