Ah pyramids, why? Well I see timber as a precious

Ah pyramids, why? Well I see timber as a precious material. It comes from one of the planet's most generous organisms. Standing there, sentinel & immobile, offering sanctuary and protection, for all who seek it, without discrimination, whilst all the while pumping out our life force, oxygen. You can add to that their 365 days a year, variant beauty. I aim for others to see it in that same precious light so I embellish its surfaces to emphasis its jewel-like properties, to add value to it & take it beyond a mere surface and into a space that shows you it's beautiful all the way through. The pyramid allows you to see four planes at once, it catches & reflects light & does so differently at different times of day. Arguably it adds a sculptural sensuality, albeit a tad spikily. We do make some without and others with it. I know I can go on & on.... & one day I'll 'share' other insights into what I see as recycled sunshine & rainwater, a gift of a material, about which, after a fifty year love affair with it, I can talk about for eons..... I must add that today is a sad day for us, our queen & her family & I offer them all our sincerest condolences. #thankyouforyourservice #thankyouforyourduty #oneardsupwardsandbeyond

The primroses peep from the scorched grasses of winter or stand ablaze against the newly green roadside banks. The white wood anemones stirs my spirit whilst the green carpet of dogs mercury brightens the woodland floor. Time to rest & take stock after deliverying these chairs to their new homes. Some sit around a 'Plectrum' table with one curve to the window seat & a centenary curve into the room. The tall backed 'poise' chair, in oiled tiger oak, offers a sentinel greeting beside a 'canti 3' hallway piece delivered at Christmas. A satisfactory union of festivals. The 'Poise' dining chair is born. I've been working on this piece, with senior maker Rick Long, for a couple of years. Its aim is to complement our 'Poise' Carver chair. Both are laminated & then sensually sculpted. It has a robust and capable join between the seat & back assembly & the laminated 'sprung' legs. When I designed this piece I had a greyhound, straining at the leash in mind, poised ready for action. It is sensual, sculptural & comfortable. The compound curves evoke the body & the chair's desire to accommodate it comfortably, capably & beautifully. Side tables, surfaces, sculptural shapes, designed & made in my workshop over the last forty years, all bought to life by what the client puts upon them. I am constantly given joy by how the client 'animates' my work. This is part of the motor that keeps me reaching for the sketchbook & drawing board. I convey this to the makers in our workshop, we'll put part of our soul into the realisation of a design but its the client's taking possession of it that will breath the life into it. It is that synergy that rounds the circle, that completes the soul. I love Friday evenings when the workshop transform

I love Friday evenings when the workshop transforms itself from bustling energy to quiet serenity, gently resting with its efforts in stasis, in various states of progress. This is such a precious time for me, a time of contemplation admittedly with my insatiable darting, eye flicking over the detail, checking it's on track with our intent & design. That restlessness is the designer's lot, part of the fuel driving them & me.
